PADI Openwater Referral

The PADI Referral allows you to complete most of your scuba training at one location / dive centre and then finish your 4 certification dives with us at Ossimba Beach Lodge.

You will complete some or all of the first 2 phases with an open water referral.

The PADI Open Water course has 3 phases:

  1. Knowledge development (theory) which can either be completed at a dive centre or with the PADI eLearning online system.
  2. Confined water training (pool sessions). This is where you go underwater for the very first time and practice using scuba gear in a pool (or pool-like environment) until you are comfortable. You will learn the basic scuba diving skills in a progressive order.
  3. Open Water dives. This is the best part and what you are waiting for.

Instead of spending 4-5 days of your holiday studying and practicing skills in a pool, you will arrive with the majority of your Open Water course done i.e., phase 1 & 2. All that is left to do at Ossimba Beach Lodge is to complete phase 3, the four fun ocean dives.

PADI Scuba Diver

What is the difference between a Scuba Diver & Open Water diver you may ask?

You may have heard people say that they are a scuba diver or that they are a PADI Diver.

An Open Water diver is the first certification level, having completed the full course (4 – 5 days in duration and allows you to:

  1. Obtain air fills
  2. Rent dive equipment
  3. Dive on your own with a buddy up to a maximum depth of 18 meters
  4. Book boat dives
  5. Take additional classes such as underwater photography
  6. Plan and execute dives with a certified buddy or dive professional to a maximum depth of 18 meters
  7. Gain experience in being a qualified diver with the aim of becoming an Advanced Open Water diver

The PADI Scuba Diver course (2-3 days) is like obtaining a learner’s licence but not yet being fully qualified to drive on your own. It is an intermediate step towards full scuba certification for aspiring divers who:

  1. Don’t have the time to complete the full Open Water course
  2. Cannot finish their Open Water training due to unique circumstances

You can become a Scuba Diver by:

  1. Being over 10 years old
  2. Able to swim
  3. Being medically fit for scuba diving – in some countries this may require a medical certificate from a physician

A Scuba Diver rated diver may only dive under the direct supervision of a PADI professional to a maximum depth of 12 metres.

The PADI Scuba Diver course is roughly the first half of the PADI Open Water course. It omits some of the challenging skills and is a good choice for aspiring scuba divers who have limited time and are not sure whether they would like to become fully qualified Open Water divers.

You will:

  1. Learn fundamental concepts about scuba through the PADI eLearning or classroom instruction
  2. Complete 3 confined (pool) water sessions
  3. Complete 2 open water (ocean/lake) dives
