Scuba diving

A marine protected coral reef just a few metres out from the lodge, makes scuba diving an absolute must when visiting Ossimba.

The lodge has a inflatable, semi-ridged 6.5 metre Gemini dive boat, powered by two 60 hp Yamaha motors, and fitted with GPS, VHF radio and all the necessary safety equipment. There are various wrecks and locations suitable for any diver, from the anxious beginner to the experienced explorer.

Divers are bound to be awestruck by the bright and beautiful underwater coral community teeming with marvelous marine life. Expect to come face to face with a diverse collection of reef fish, shrimps, moray eels, turtles and even the sort after Nudibranch! The reefs on the northern side of Mozambique near Nacala Bay are known to be the most beautiful in the country.

In addition to our house reef there are a number of deep wall dives and wrecks across the bay, at Baixa do Pinda to explore. All scuba divers must be fully qualified and proof of qualification must be presented on arrival. Resort courses can be arranged if we are notified well in advance.

The on-site dive centre is fully equipped with six complete sets of Scubapro equipment including:

  • Wetsuits
  • Masks
  • Snorkels
  • Fins
  • Weight belts

Reef snorkeling

For for those who may be a little overwhelmed at the thought of scuba diving, reef snorkeling is something all Ossimba Beach Lodge guests should indulge in.

The marine protected coral reef bordering Ossimba’s shoreline is exclusively available to lodge guests, meaning that some of the most gorgeous, healthy, and untouched reef in Mozambique is located right on your doorstep. Grab your snorkel gear and spend a few hours observing sea life from just below the ocean’s surface.

Fishing

Fishing trips are provided by prior arrangement for all guests and visitors

Both line fishing and spearfishing are an option, but only catching of pelagic fish is permitted. Pelagic fish found in the area include: Dorado, Wahoo, Tuna (Dogtooth and Yellow-fin), Sailfish, Barracuda and Giant Trevally (GT)

Depending on the season and fishing method, some may be more prevalent than others. Feel free to query with Ossimba Beach Lodge staff should you be interested in arranging a fishing trip.

Whale Watching

July to September is peak whale watching season in Mozambique.

The most common whale found in Mozambique is the Humpback Whale. These migratory whales make their way to the warmer waters of the Indian Ocean to mate and give birth. Humpback whales are known to be particularly acrobatic, making them easy to spot from land. Ossimba’s boat can take you out to sea to view these gentle giants from the water.

The elusive Whale Shark has also been seen in our waters.

Kayaking

Kayaking has to be the most interesting way to explore and navigate through Ossimba Beach Lodge’s nearby mangroves. Being able to tread so closely to these unique seaside forests often makes for one of the most unique and memorable experiences of any trip to Mozambique. Alternatively, you could take a kayak out onto the ocean for a day at the beach with a difference.

Surfing and stand up paddling

SUP boards are available to guests. The calm conditions at Ossimba Beach Lodge allow for beginners or advanced paddle boarders to experience a memorable day on the ocean. On occasion conditions allow for longboard surfing.

Bird watching and forest walks

Explore the nearby vegetation by signing up for a forest walk and stopping to indulge in some bird watching. The diversity of both endemic and migratory birds present at any given time is always a delight to nature lovers and avid bird watchers alike. To experience the forest and the animals that inhabit it at its best, opt for an early morning or late afternoon excursion.

Restaurant and Bar

Dining at Ossimba Beach Lodge is an intriguing experience, with menu items that fuse both local and international flavours.

Only the freshest ingredients are sourced locally, from both land and sea, while a selection of local beers and an extensive list of wines and spirits are the perfect accompaniment to a memorable meal. Adjacent to the Ossimba dining and entertainment area, the pool and Sunset Bar provide a perfect way to end your day with cocktail in hand.
